Understanding Termites

The Gold Coast’s warm, humid subtropical climate creates ideal conditions for year-round termite activity. Several highly destructive species are active across both regions, each requiring a precise, species-specific management approach to ensure effective protection.

Termite Species Active in the GC

Effective protection begins with understanding the four most prevalent termite species and how they can silently destroy the structural integrity of your home.

  • Coptotermes acinaciformis – Queensland’s most destructive subterranean termite, responsible for the majority of structural damage.

  • Schedorhinotermes (Black-ant termite) – Common in SEQ soils, often established in landscaping timbers, retaining walls and tree stumps.

  • Nasutitermes (Tree termites) – Build distinctive arboreal nests and can extend into roof voids.

  • Cryptotermes (Drywood termites) – Less common but capable of infesting structural timbers without soil contact.

Warning Signs of Termite Activity

Visible damage is usually the final stage of a termite infestation. Early detection and intervention can prevent extensive structural repair costs.

A professional inspection is the only reliable way to confirm activity.

  • Mud shelter tubes along foundations, walls or piers

  • Hollow-sounding timber when tapped

  • Tight-fitting doors or windows due to internal timber distortion

  • Discarded wings near windows, doors or light fittings (often after rain)

  • Damage to skirting boards, architraves or roof timbers

  • Fine timber dust or frass (typically associated with drywood termites)

Proactive Protection for your Home

True termite protection is preventative, not reactive.

A properly installed and maintained termite barrier is the single most effective defence against structural damage to your home.

  • Install a professionally designed termite barrier system tailored to your property’s construction and soil conditions

  • Eliminate soil-to-timber contact around the home

  • Maintain effective drainage and repair leaks immediately

  • Ensure adequate subfloor ventilation

  • Remove tree stumps and timber debris from the property

  • Store firewood and timber well away from the structure

  • Schedule annual comprehensive termite inspections
